Challenges in Topology Optimization for Coupled Multiphysics Designs
Topology optimization in engineering design has demonstrated its capability to provide creative and unintuitive designs, previously not thought of. For a component designed for one functionality under one physics, an optimized design is often intuitive and apparent to experienced engineers thus, given the potential challenges associated with manufacturing and scaling of production, topology optimization may not offer significant benefits over the traditional engineering approaches. However, when considering multiphysics multifunctional structures, the internal interdisciplinary conflicts are not apparent to engineers and the optimized designs are likely to be beyond human intuition. The benefits of topology optimization thus, can be substantial in complex multifunctional structures. The presentation will present our research multiphysics topology optimization in engineering design and the challenges.
